* 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라 *
우리는 너무나 많은 시간과 관심을 신체적인 외모에 쏟기 때문에 그것을 우리 삶의 가장 중요한 부분으로 생각하기 쉽습니다. 그러나 성경은 우리에게 하나님은 우리가 우리 자신과 타인들을 다른 각도에서 보기 원하신다고 일러줍니다. 하나님이 이스라엘의 새 왕에게 기름을 붓기 위해서 사무엘을 보내셨을 때(삼상16:1), 하나님은 사무엘에게 신체적인 특징보다도 더 깊은 내면을 보도록 말씀 하셨습니다.“그 용모와 신장을 보지 말라……나의 보는 것은 사람과 같지 아니하니 사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라(7)” 하나님의 말씀은 외모를 보고 호감을 갖는 사람들을 호되게 비판하십니다(약2:1-2). 우리가 하나님의 눈을 통하여 사람을 보기 시작할 때 우리의 관심은 외모에서 삶으로 바뀔 것입니다. 우리의 거울은 외모를 비추고 하나님의 거울은 내면의 모습을 보여 줍니다.
So much of our time and attention are devoted to physical appearance that it’s easy to consider it the most important aspect of our lives. But the Bible reminds us that God wants us to see ourselves and others differently. When the Lord sent Samuel to anoint a new king over Israel(1 Samuel 16:1), God reminded him to look deeper than physical characteristics: “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature … . For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart”(v.7). God’s Word has some harsh condemnation for those who show favoritism based on appearances (James 2:1-2). When we begin to see people through God’s eyes, our focus will change from looks to life. Our mirrors reflect the outward appearance; God’s mirror reveals the inward condition.
