** 예수님께서 보이신 섬김의 본 **
예수님께서 제자들의 발을 씻어주시는 이야기를 읽을 때 우리는 왜 예수님께서 그렇게 하셨는지 이해한다고 생각할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 유다의 발은 왜 씻어주셨을까요? 예수님께서는 곧 인류 역사상 최악의 배반을 행할 사람의 시중을 들기 위해 당신이 구부리고 계시다는 것을 알고 계셨습니다. 다 아시면서도, 생명을 주시는 것과 연관된 이름을 가지신 분이 대대로 배반과 죽음을 상징하게 될 이름을 가진 자의 시중을 들고자 손을 더럽히신 것입니다. 예수님께서 보이신 본은 우리에게 섬김에 대해 무언가 특별한 것을 말해주지 않습니까? 그것은 우리와 비슷한 사람, 또는 우리를 좋아하는 사람만을 섬기라고 우리가 부름 받은 것이 아니라는 것을 생각나게 하지 않습니까? 우리는 사랑스러운 사람이나 사랑스럽지 않은 사람, 그 모든 사람들을 섬기라고 부름 받았습니다. 당신이 마지막으로 유다 같은 사람의 “발을 씻어준 것”이 언제입니까? 댓돌 위에 서서 밑에 있는 사람의 발을 씻기기는 어렵습니다.
When we read the story of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet, we may think we understand why He was doing that for them. But why did He wash the feet of Judas? Jesus knew that He was stooping down to serve the one who would soon stoop to perform history’s worst act of treachery. Knowingly, the One whose name is associated with giving life got His hands dirty to serve the one whose name would stand for betrayal and death for the rest of time. Doesn’t Jesus’ example tell us something special about service? Doesn’t it remind us that we are not called to serve only those who are like us, or even those who care for us? We are called to serve all people – the lovely and the unlovely. When was the last time you “washed the feet” of someone like Judas? It’s difficult to stand on a pedestal and wash the feet of those below.
